Those who destroy knowledge, with ink, fire, or sword,
are themselves destroyed.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS on first meeting, ness may give the impression of someone attempting not to be noticed. she has a deliberately unassuming bearing and a tendency to cling to the edges of a room. her voice is high, with the range of a soprano, though she doesn't sing. she rarely raises her voice, except when particularly bothered, at which point she can lose track of both her volume and her reason and turn into madeline kahn. she bathes enough not to be particularly offensive in any manner, but only employs a faint rosewater scent for perfume.
IC PERMISSIONS
  • physical affection—pls hug her she needs it so badly

  • physical violence—you could pour hot soup in her lap and she'd apologize to you

  • relationships—she will accept men, women, and all those in between, of ages 18 and up

  • psionic information—her mind is Weird, and she is also psychic. let me know if you're getting in those brain meats and i can provide some flavor for your character to catch!

OOC PERMISSIONS
  • backtagging—always, no need to ask!

  • threadhopping—ask for a particularly emotional thread, but otherwise yes!

  • fourthwalling—unless it's integral to your character, like deadpool, please no.

  • format—brackets, but if you're very attached to prose i'll match!

  • offensive subjects—please warn for animal violence!
FADE RIFT TELEPATHY ness is a telepath who has to "switch on" her telepathy, so to speak—it isn't constantly running, so she won't be reading anyone's mind just by being in the same room as them. she may, though, choose to read and speak into someone's mind if she trusts them, if it benefits her in some major way to do so, or if she's afraid of not knowing what they're up to. given that in the setting only blood mages can do magic that affects the mind like that, ness is not likely to use her telepathy unless she feels absolutely safe with the person she's using it on, or she sees absolutely no other way to avoid an extremely negative outcome.

that being said, i completely understand that some people may not want her in their characters' heads at all! my default assumption will be that anyone who does not opt in to this power does not want their character's mind read, in order to avoid potentially causing any issues. if you don't mind ness using her telepathy on your character, please fill out the below form and leave a comment with the responses for each character that you're opting in for.

Player: k2

Character opting in: Cedric Carsus
Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: Extremely negative. Would currently narc about it to leadership and the Chantry.
Situations in which telepathy is permitted: I’m always cool with this OOC. IC, if he's aware of it happening, it means a lot of fallout with their CR and the broader game. Unaware is fine.

Character opting in: Isaac
Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: Neutral when used on other people, very negative when used on him. Might tell another Rebellion mage.
Situations in which telepathy is permitted: I’m always cool with this OOC. IC, it will go better if he's unaware of what's happening. If he's aware, he will be nasty.

Character opting in: Lazar
Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: Doesn't care. Unlikely to narc, and not generally considered a reliable witness anyway. Root around in there if you want, babe.
Situations in which telepathy is permitted: I’m always cool with this OOC.

Character opting in: Sennara
Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic:
Very negative. Likely to roll with it in the moment, and then go try to use it as leverage w Riftwatch leadership.
Situations in which telepathy is permitted:
I'm always cool with this OOC. IC, it will go better if she's unaware of what's happening.

Character opting in: Lamentation Strand
Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic:
If you're not draining The Innocent? Whatever. Telepathy seems useful, if uncomfortable given its proximity to Calling stuff. Very negative reaction to mind control used on him. Likely to tell the other Wardens.
Situations in which telepathy is permitted:
I'm always cool with this OOC.

Player: MJ

Character opting in: Bastien
Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: Normal levels of scared of blood magic but likely to consider she’s a rifter and have a conversation rather than hit the panic button. Extremely offended by the potential intrusion aspect though.

Character opting in: Kostos
Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: Bad bad bad bad but like Isaac he would tell the mages so they could address the optics in-house before he would go to the div heads, Templars, etc. Probably. If he was really mad he might just make a crystal post to tell everyone.

Character opting in: Redvers
Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: The worst. Would cause big problems if he was aware regardless of explanations, including telling Templar & Chantry folks outside of Riftwatch. Don’t recommend.

Character opting in: Xiomara
Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: Negative and suspicious about blood magic but could be like “oh okay” if explained to about telepathy being different in advance.

Character opting in: Siorus
Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: Pragmatic & curious.

Situations in which telepathy is permitted: Any & all, I like surprises and consequences.

Player: you know
Character opting in: Gwenaëlle Baudin
Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: "do not fucking get caught doing that", how strongly opposed she is depending on how risky she thinks it is a given person is going to act stupid and bring down heat on Riftwatch for doing the naughty magic. She doesn't love the idea of someone in her head, but she's also the same woman who has had to be told, twice, that she was experiencing the effects of a truth serum, so, wobble hands. May tattle selectively, but not to the cops.
Situations in which telepathy is permitted: she'll react better if there is minimal risk of outside witnesses!

Player: Ammmy

Character opting in: Cosima
Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: She's been in Thedas long enough to be aware that blood magic optics are bad, but doesn't have the same kneejerk fear of it that many natives do. (She's also a rifter, so she's like "uh if you are not using blood, I am not sure how this is blood magic.") Might have a talk with her about the potential risks of other people knowing, especially given her leadership responsibilities, but will not freak out herself.

Character opting in: Julius
Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: Not great Bob. Julius has some blood magic baggage that means he takes it pretty damn seriously. Like a lot of the other mages, though, he's more inclined to tell other mages so they can try to deal with it in house. He also intellectually understands rifter magic can be different, but may need to be talked down a bit from an initial reaction.

Character opting in: Vanya
Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: Negative but he's not a narc. If she doesn't seem immediately dangerous, he's likely to keep an eye on/distrust her but unlikely to call the magic cops.

Character opting in: Siegfried
Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: Wow, seems interesting, but also please do not notice he has any emotions other than enthusiasm for his job. (Which is to say: fine with it in theory, could be prickly in practice depending on what she notices.)

Situations in which telepathy is permitted: OOC: I'm down whenever! But if you want to talk about potential fallout in a specific situation before we go there, feel free to grab me on plurk or discord first.
bouchonne: (oooh girl)

[personal profile] bouchonne 2024-07-18 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Player: Hope
Character opting in: Byerly
Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: Not too bad! Byerly has the typical Fereldan attitudes towards blood magic (meaning that he sees it as Bad and Wrong), but he also has a lot of "benevolent" chauvinism that means that he would be reluctant to bring harm to a nice-seeming girl like Ness (unless they've somehow already established a very negative/hostile dynamic).
Situations in which telepathy is permitted: Any time, every time
sprent: (they'll fall into their brew)

Player: Cadence

Character opting in: Abby, [personal profile] armd
Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: It's weird/off-putting but... useful. Proceed and be careful about it

Character opting in: Gela, [personal profile] sprent
Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: Hate hate hate hate loathe entirely. She's deeply afraid of magic/mages

Character opting in: Vega, [personal profile] succise
Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: Blood magic is... *tucks hair behind ear* kinda cool ha ha. Telepathy also fine whatever

Situations in which telepathy is permitted: Cool with this OOC; IC, if Gela and Vega knew telepathy were being used on them there would be immediate, bad consequences. Would ruin CR with Gela but Vega would be salvageable, after the screaming is over

[personal profile] portalling 2024-07-19 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Player: Julie

Character opting in: Stephen Strange [personal profile] portalling
Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: Distressingly open to it, and would do it himself if he could tbh. He’s cautious/pragmatic about the locals, though, so would more likely caution her about discretion & the when/where of it, rather than be bothered by her doing it at all. Is also extremely private and would dislike a stranger finding out too much about him without consent, but it’d be more along the lines of “an interesting complication” rather than “tanking CR”. Once they’re closer, he wouldn’t mind as much.

Character opting in: Astrid Runasdotten [personal profile] brennvin
Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: She’s a local, but also an Avvar so is way more chill about magic attitudes. She’s not fussed as long as it doesn’t seem to be used for harm or hostile purposes; she’s also an open book so what you see is largely what you get anyway.

Situations in which telepathy is permitted: Always cool with this OOC!

Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: She doesn't care about blood magic, like, at all, but depending on circumstances might react badly to telepathy being used on her.

[personal profile] sumptus 2024-08-06 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
Player: Jenni
Character opting in: Caius
Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: Caius isn't against blood magic or telepathy in general, but would be wary of it being used against him. So he's not going to call the cops, but he might try to blackmail her into some kind of pact of mutual silence or whatever. Normal machiavellian machinations.

OOCly I'd rather Caius didn't learn what she can do until they have fairly established CR, just because he'd be tempted to avoid her wholesale if he's worried about having his mind read, and I want CR!! If they're more than acquaintances, he's more likely to keep hanging out with her despite his paranoia about it.

Situations in which telepathy is permitted: OOC I'm fine wherever you think she would use it! Let me know if you ever need more detail, since I tend not to put much internal monologue into my tags.

Player: Cella
Character opting in: Hermione Granger
Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: Occlumency (blocking mindreading) and Legilimency (reading thoughts) and pensieves (memory you can walk through like the Fade) are all just disciplines of magic. Blood magic is trickier to accept but also what counts as blood magic to someone who can't use it? That said, anything that takes someone's willpower away will be viewed with wariness and a 10ft pole.
Situations in which telepathy is permitted: Honestly the first one, but if she notices she'll say please just talk to me instead. She'll think speaking into her head is incredible though and wish she could do it too. But some thoughts and feelings are meant to stay private.

Sidebar any kind of combat or similar situation would be ok. Like if she were gagged. Or - honestly best to just check, I feel like after an intensive conversation they'd have a whole list of what is and isn't an ok scenario.

Ooc check with me if you don't wanna play that out, these two can end up writing forms by candlelight. Mindreading contracts.

Player: libbitha
Character opting in: Petrana de Cedoux
Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: Ambivalent; as long as it doesn't seem to be a threat (in the specific way that it's being used or in the likelihood of exposing Riftwatch and people within it to exterior threat) then it's something to keep tabs on and keep quiet, not an automatic dealbreaker. Gets filed under "well, that's a way to deal with you in the future if you're a problem" (not Ness specific, across the board), just in case.
Situations in which telepathy is permitted: Don't surprise her with it; as long as she knows it's possible and knows the limitations involved, then it's a useful tool. Should be exclusively used in that context.

Player: Jade.
Character opting in: Wanda!

Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: She's a telepath so who is she to judge? She's pro-telepathy, and would offer to help her if that was something she desired. She'd heed caution and want to keep the fallout of using telepathy to an absolute minimum since she's experienced severe blowback for negative opinions on powers used around those who don't understand and fear them (and she does not… want… to get caught up in it for PR purposes).

Wanda won't like her mind being read beyond surface-level thoughts unless she consents to it, which is ironic.

Situations in which telepathy is permitted: Any time! (Talking via telepathy is one of my favourite things, so bring it!) Wanda won't like it if it's done intentionally to solicit information she's unwilling to give up. (If this is ever of interest, I'm happy to plot this out so we can have fun with any consequences. It definitely won't tank CR because lbr Wanda is a hypocrite.)

Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: Blood magic in general is something he's against, but he's also willing to take things on a case-by-case basis if/when no harm is being done.

Character opting in: Vandren
Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: Something of a blood mage himself, albeit unadvertised due to southern attitudes and chantry influence. Potentially more likely to recognize it for what it is than most. He'll dislike having someone in his thoughts bc he's not a good person, but won't be overly alarmed by the blood magic implications.
Situations in which telepathy is permitted: Go nuts. I tend to write without much inner monologue/direct placement of thought to page so if she is prying in there, pls lemme know (even if it's just making it explicit in a tag) so I can actually put content in there for her to find.

Player: libbitha
Character opting in: Athénaïs Tavarys
Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: In a sort of general sense, neutral to wary about blood magic, generally — in a hypothetical scenario where blood magic existed as a concept in a vacuum, and the blood used was exclusively one’s own, that sounds like one’s own business. In the world around her, it most frequently derives from violent egomania or the kind of desperation you get off cornered dogs, and either way, it probably means somebody’s about to have a really shitty day. Telepathy specifically: more negative, get outta her head Charles.
Situations in which telepathy is permitted: In terms of ‘Athénaïs is permitting it’: when it has been explicitly communicated in advance, there is absolutely no feasible alternative, and someone’s going to imminently die if something isn’t immediately communicated. In terms of when it’s OOC permissible: any time, bearing in mind any other scenario that she’s aware of will probably impact CR.
wardwitch: (Default)

[personal profile] wardwitch 2025-03-30 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Player: Dylan
Character opting in: Argent Tavarys
Character attitude to telepathy/blood magic: Until really recently her perspective was mostly governed by how the Wardens as a whole don't forbid it--anything it takes to win. But then all these situations happened and she's warier, but still ultimately believes if it's majority the person's own blood and they aren't using it to like, mind control babies, that's ultimately the mage's own choice. No narcing from this corner, but that said: warn her if telepathy is likely to be used.

Situations in which telepathy is permitted: Usually not a problem, though there are certain areas in which she's like, taken a vow of secrecy and all, so please avoid those and their CR shouldn't suffer.
